Split by Bookmarks

Split a PDF at its bookmark/outline entries

How to use Split by Bookmarks

Separate chapters and sections using existing PDF bookmarks, including nested outline levels, while retaining every source page.

  1. Choose a PDF, review its bookmark outline, and select a level or individual section starts. Correct unresolved source page targets when necessary.
  2. Review section page ranges, choose how to include front matter, and set filenames based on bookmark titles or source pages.
  3. Create the section PDFs, preview them, and download individual files or a ZIP. Relevant internal bookmarks can be retained within each output.

What to check before using the result

Sections follow source page order. Bookmarks sharing a page are merged into one section start. External links and unresolved destinations cannot define a split until assigned a valid internal page. A PDF without bookmarks can be split by pages or text instead.

Common questions

Where does Split by Bookmarks process my document?

This tool processes your document in your browser. There is no document upload to the application server for this operation. Download the result to keep your own copy.

Can I use Split by Bookmarks on my phone?

Open Split by Bookmarks in a modern mobile browser and use the same document controls. Large files and image-heavy documents can take longer on a phone; a desktop browser is useful when you need more screen space.

Is a CreatePDF account required?

No CreatePDF account is needed. Core PDF operations do not add a watermark. Download any output you need to retain.
